How to make a presentation to a school group

If you have a child with trich or want to reach out to children with trich, this is the project for you! First, decide your audience (staff? students? parents?) and talk to the school about getting on the schedule to speak to this group for 30-60 minutes. TLC will provide you with talking points for addressing each specific audience, TLC brochures, and a 12-minute video about kids with trich called Straight from the Heart. You will be teaching the next generation what trich is (and is NOT) and how to help someone who has trich.

Talking Points for a School Group

Sign-In Sheet

1. Think about what audience you want to speak to.

Possible audiences include: kids in their classroom, teachers at a staff meeting or in-service, the principal, school nurse, or counselor, in a small group or one-on-one, parents at a PTA meeting.

2. Do some research to find the right audience by calling your local school or department of education.

Ask how much time you will be given to make your presentation, and ask to set a date on their calendar.

3. Based on your audience, select the materials you need TLC to provide.

These materials can include: brochures for teachers, brochures for kids, and brochures for clinicians treating children. You can also purchase a 12-minute DVD, "Straight from the Heart" about children with trich, or a 60-minute documentary, "Bad Hair Life," about living with trich.

4. Call TLC or email info @ trich .org and we will send you appropriate materials for your audience.

We will also provide talking points designed especially for each audience. You may download brochures about trichotillomania and compulsive skin picking as well as the promotional poster now!

5. Prepare for your presentation.

Familiarize yourself with the materials you will be passing out or viewing. Make sure any audio-visual equipment you need will be available.

6. Confirm your speaking date two weeks beforehand.

7. Make your presentation!

Pass out any educational materials and ask anyone who is interested to join the TLC mailing list on the provided sign in sheet.

8. Fill out and return the feedback form to TLC.

Let us know what went well, what could have gone better, and how we can better support you or other speakers in the future.
